The following is a summary of the systematic review findings up to the date of our most recent literature search. If you have a specific clinical case, we strongly recommend you read all of the relevant references as cited and look for additional material published outside our search dates.

  • We undertook a separate newborn-specific literature search of international literature (search terms used); of these, 15 articles addressed this issue 1-15
  • Study designs:
    4 prospective cohort studies 1,7,8,10
    11 case series 2-6,9,11-15
  • Time from birth to examination:
Seven studies reported cases examined less than 24 hours after birth 1-3,11-14
Six studies reported cases examined less than 48 hours after birth 4-6,9,10,15
Two studies reported cases examined less than 96 hours after birth 7,8
