Quality standards for oral examination

 

1.     Was / were the child / children examined by a dental care professional or other professional with dental training appropriate to the study?

 

 

2.     Were the intra / extra oral features identified using a referenced recognised index?

For example,

–          ICDAS, BASCD, WHO criteria for decay / caries

–          PUFA for clinical features consequent upon decay, such as dental abscesses, facial swelling, spreading cellulitis

 

 

3.     Were the intra / extra oral features identified using unreferenced but explicitly stated criteria,

or were the features described in detail?

 

  • If you have been UNABLE TO ANSWER YES TO EITHER QUESTION 2 OR 3, the study is excluded.

 

  • If you HAVE ANSWERED YES TO EITHER QUESTION 2 OR QUESTION 3, please answer questions 4, 5 or 6.

 

 

  1. Was the practitioner trained in the use of the index / criteria?

 

 

  1. Was the amount / prevalence of caries quantified in the child (e.g. DMFT)?

 

 

  1. Was the child / children examined by more than one practitioner?
